What You're Really Paying For When You Buy Solar Gear on Amazon

Marketplaces charge sellers a referral fee on every sale — a percentage of the total, including shipping. The returns reserve

This is the big, invisible one. Electronics get returned a lot — industry data puts electronics return rates around 15%, well above the retail average, and e-commerce returns overall run near 19%. Every returned, restocked, refurbished, or written-off unit is a cost, and sellers spread that cost across every item they sell. In effect, the careful buyers subsidize the returners. To be fair: marketplaces aren't ripping anyone off. The fees and the free returns are exactly how the model works, and for a lot of products it's a fair deal. Convenience and zero-risk returns have real value, and plenty of buyers want to pay for them. There's nothing wrong with that.

The mismatch is specific to you. The off-grid builder who already knows the gear is the worst-fit customer for a model built around uncertainty and impulse. You're paying the insurance premium and never filing a claim.
